Cheers to those long-standing “Save The Woodlands @ Shenandoah Life” yard signs. They still dot lawns everywhere in the neighborhoods surrounding Carilion’s “Park View” property. It’s been a year since plans to sell and level the woods for profit were made public and people like me have not forgotten.
The outcome seems clear and it will be a sad day when the bulldozers arrive. I’ve noticed though for now the owls are back nesting. Red-tailed hawks keep perching atop those beautiful old pines. Brown-headed nuthatches keep chattering in tall trees. Walking the trails there reminds me that we are not the measure of all things.
The yard signs remain in protest at a time when it seems never more important to speak up.
