Virginia's Top 25: Big Ten lands top signees

Ricky Slade

C.D. Hylton's Ricky Slade.

Ricky Slade was rated the No. 1 junior football prospect in Virginia following the 2016 season and probably would have been the top sophomore and freshman prospect if the annual Roanoke Times rankings had such a designation.

“I had seen some film of him from the seventh and eighth grade and I was impressed,” said Tony Lilly, Slade’s coach at C.D. Hylton High School in Woodbridge. “As soon as he got out of the eighth grade, he started working out with us during the summer.”

It struck Lilly that Slade could play a major role and he shared that thought with 13-year defensive coordinator Dave Anthony.

“I looked at [Anthony] and said, ‘You might think I’m crazy, but this kid might be our starting tailback as a freshman,’ ” Lilly said. “He and I had been together for a long time and he looked at me and said, ‘C’mon coach, there’s a big difference between a ninth-grader and an 11th- or 12th-grader.”

On his first carry in Hylton’s first preseason scrimmage, Slade raced 76 yards for a touchdown.

“I looked at [Anthony] and I said, ‘No doubt, he’s our starting tailback,’ ” Lilly said. “He looked at me and said, ‘Absolutely.’ ”

That same season, Slade (5 foot 9, 185 pounds) had an eight-touchdown game and he recently finished his Hylton career with 5,540 rushing yards and 72 touchdowns. He also had 65 receptions.

“He has the ability to make people miss; he has probably the best vision I’ve ever seen in coaching,” Lilly said. “He has the ability to make his cuts at full speed. The biggest part of it for me is, he’s a 4.4-[second] 40 kid and it takes him about three steps to get to that speed.

“He has tremendous explosion.”

Slade, this year’s Roanoke Times pick as the No. 1 prospect in Virginia, committed to Penn State on the day after national signing day last February.

“I think he had something like 18 offers in his freshman year,” Lilly said. “Never had a ninth-grader like that.

“He started making visits to a lot of the schools that had offered him but he kept finding himself going back to Penn State. From the early part of his recruiting, he really felt that Penn State was the place for him.”

It’s less than four hours from northern Virginia to State College, Pennsylvania, and the Nittany Lions have signed another Roanoke Times top-five pick from Slade’s part of the state, offensive tackle Nana Asiedu (6-5, 275 pounds) from North Stafford.

Between Penn State and rival Ohio State, four players off the Roanoke Times’ Top Five are headed to the Big Ten, including the state’s top-rated linebackers, Teradja Mitchell (6-2, 235) from Bishop Sullivan in Virginia Beach and K’Vaughan Pope (6-2, 210) from Dinwiddie, both headed to Ohio State.

Penn State had signed four of the top 11 prospects off The Roanoke Times’ Top 25 last year, when the Nos. 1 and 2 picks, Bishop Sullivan running back Khalan Laborn and defensive end Jordan Williams from Cox in Virginia Beach, signed with Florida State and Clemson, respectively.

No Virginia prospects picked FSU or Clemson this year as Virginia Tech had the most overall success in Virginia, landing six Top 25 players, including three of the top 10, headed by recent catch James Mitchell, a tight end from Union High School in Big Stone Gap, at No. 5.

The Hokies also signed the top-rated prospect from the Roanoke Times circulation area, Timesland, in 6-foot, 185-pound Blacksburg High School speedster Cole Beck, whose versatility has him projected as a running back, wide receiver or return specialist.

A second Timesland product on the Top 25 is record-setting Staunton River running back Grayson Overstreet, who made an early commitment to Richmond and is one of two FCS-bound players on the Top 25.

More than 60 in-state players took advantage of a three-day early signing period that expired Friday, and that number would have approached 70 if not for commitments to Army and Navy, which are not bound by national letters of intent.
